Family Services

Ages: 3 to 5 years

The Family Services Coordinator (FSC) supports families of children with special needs from 36 months to school entry. For many families, their first CDC contact is with the FSC.

Areas where the FSC may assist include:

  • Support
    • Listening and respecting parent/caregiver concerns
  • Information & Resources
    • On child development; positive behaviour management; various special needs/diagnoses/syndromes; specialized programs/activities/support groups (local, provincial, national and worldwide); funding available for equipment/travel expenses/specialized activities
  • Advocacy
    • To access programs and services
  • Parent Connections
    • Introductions may be made one-to-one, in small or large groups, or by drop-in parent “coffee connection” program
  • Service Coordination
    • With both “in-house” and “outside” of CDC programs (Sunny Hill & Northern Health outreach programs, kindergarten transition,
      moves to other communities/provinces, etc.)

Visits are made at the Centre, in the home, or in the community with lots of contact provided over the phone.

Referrals:  Referrals are accepted from parents/guardians, doctors, nurses, social workers, other CDC team members, people that are concerned about a child’s development, or other organizations. Referrals should be made only with the parent/guardian’s knowledge and consent.
